June 7th- 10th 2010 Optional set up on June 6th 2:30pm-4:30pm
Susan Moran- 4 day workshop description Shibori: Dyeing and Discharge
This
workshop will cover the basics of dyeing with Procion MX dyes, as well
as introducing students to several methods for creating beautiful,
unique patterns on fabric using Japanese shibori, or bound-resist,
techniques. There will be a thorough discussion of dye principles,
basic dye chemistry, safety, and practices for mixing dyebaths from
stock solutions as well as powders. We will make both acid and alkaline
dyebaths for different fabric types. Students will learn bound,
clamped, stitched, and shaped-resist shibori, and make a series
of samples with a variety of natural fiber fabrics. The resulting
samples may become part of future projects such as quilts, collages,
wall-hangings, or table linens.
During the second half of the
workshop students will start with dark cloth and create patterning and
designs through the techniques of Japanese shibori. We will then make
chemical discharging baths to remove color from unresisted areas of the
cloth, creating dramatic and sometimes surprising designs. We will
discuss the chemicals and processes involved in discharge dyeing, as
well as health and safety issues. Further shibori techniques will be
demonstrated. At the end of the week students may choose to move on to
a larger project in discharge or dyeing. It will also be possible to
work further on samples, by overdyeing or discharging, in order to
create complex patterns, stitched imagery, or shaped forms.
Supply List
Sturdy rubber gloves (not disposable) Work clothes 1 ball of strong cotton string scissors hand sewing needle and quilting thread 2 lb. salt (preferably non-iodized, kosher is fine) masking tape handful of large size paper clips, binder clips, or clothespins hand quilting thread and needle 1 C-clamp with minimum 3” jaw 2
identical blocks of sturdy wood or plexiglass, no thicker than ½. ”
Blocks should be around 2-4” squares, rectangles, or other simple
shapes. Permanent marker for labeling fabrics while in dyepot
Fabric: A
small amount of fabric will be provided, but students should bring a
variety of 100% natural fiber fabrics to enrich their workshop
experience, as every fabric takes dye and discharge differently.
For Dyeing: White
or light colored, prewashed high quality cotton (broadcloth, sateen,
pima, twill- NOT muslin), linen, rayon, or silk- 1-3 yd. total
depending on your goals for the class. Fabrics may be in small pieces,
may include such things as scarf blanks, prehemmed table napkins, silk
blouses from Value World to cut up, sewing remnants, unusually textured
fabrics, etc. Make sure all fabrics are natural fiber!!
For Discharge: Small
pieces (1/4-1/2 yd) of 4 different types and/or colors of cotton,
linen, rayon or silk. You should have a total of 1-1/2 to 2 yds
PREWASHED fabric. The quilting section of Joanne fabrics usually has a
good selection of deeply colored cottons that discharge well. Include
at least one piece of dark silk- blouses from Value World are a good
source of inexpensive silk for samples (be sure blouses are labeled as
silk). Not all fabrics will discharge- even natural fiber fabrics, so
it is important to have a variety of fabrics and not simply one or two
yards of one kind of fabric.
$15 material fee for supplies instructor will bring.
