"Encaustic Intensive,
Basics and Beyond"
Exploring Encaustic Painting,
Collage & Monoprint

Encaustic workshop information

Encaustic is a very ancient painting technique using beeswax as the paint medium. It’s a luscious material which can be used to produce beautiful, translucent  and highly textural surfaces.  First used in the Faynum period of Egypt over two thousand years ago, encaustic is now undergoing a renaissance and is growing in popularity.

This 3 day intensive workshop will provide an deep introduction to using this beautiful but challenging medium.  Encaustic is worked in a molten state with a heated palette and a propane torch or heat gun to fuse paint layers to one another.  In this workshop students will learn to use the torch, how to aply the paint and use it as a collage medium par excellence. We will explore painting in encaustic, combining it with mixed media in collage and assemblage as well as making encaustic monoprints.

This workshop will be tailored to the needs of the individuals attending.  If you've got some encaustic experience there will be lots more to build on here - no need to be a beginner but beginners are welcome!

Students will be provided with  paints, brushes and substrates on which to paint. A selection of tools will be available to try out as well. The materials fee of approximately $100 will cover encaustic paint, 7 blocks of medium, substrates including plywood panels, a cigar box for assemblage, paper for monoprinting, brushes and other materials.

Propane torches, heat guns and heated palettes will be available for purchase if needed, (approximate cost $25 for palette and $30 for torch).

Participants should bring materials they are interested in incorporating into mixed media assemblage or collage pieces.  This includes but is not limited to old photos, magazines, tools, small objects, natural materials like seeds, dried leaves, pebbles, etc.

Students may bring drawings, photocopies or digital prints (on non-glossy paper) that they would like to incorporate into encaustic.

If they have them it is useful for students to bring drawing materials including pencils, oil pastels and any oil paints.

Students should wear studio clothing - encaustic does not come out of clothing.
